We’re going to break down the different hardware choices you have below. We’re going to break down this debate into various sections so that you can learn some of the key differences between both of these devices. I started looking for alternatives and found EdgeRouters with their EdgeOS and people seem to be relatively happy with those and with acceptable prices.ĭo you think EdgeRouters with EdgeOS will suit my needs, or should I keep on looking? I have dedicated about 150$ for this. The official vendor supported equipment is too much for my budget (350$ for mid range sg-3100), and while I know I can use a prebuilt or build my own router, I don’t want to debug it every time a software update goes bad because of some hardware incompatibility. Now, initially I was looking for something with pfSense, since it’s open source and frequently updated ( I know it’s overkill, but when a major security flaw is discovered I like to know it’s being addressed). So some nice decent security defaults will be nice ![]() Although I’m not that technical illiterate, I don’t like messing endlessly with settings and configurations that I have no clue what they mean. (bonus point) have a decent out of the box security. have vpn server/client capabilities(OpenVPN preferably) be gigabit (let’s say 5-10 devices with a max of 20 very rarely connected) ![]() ![]() have firmware support for as much as possible ( this is the main reason I’m looking for a new router, long term software support and security issues addressed, not like mainstream vendors like Asus or Dlink) I’m in the market for a new home router and I’m looking for something that can suit my needs.
